Centipedes

Arizona has 2 different species of centipedes (Lizotte et al.).

Common Desert Centipede (Scolopendra polymorpha)

Name: Common Desert Centipede
Size: 4-5 inches in length.
Habitat: They are only active at night and spend time under rocks or in burrows in dry grasslands, forests or deserts.
Prey: Insects, lizards and small rodents.
Danger: These animals do not bite, but pinch. A pinch from the common desert centipede can be painful but is generally not dangerous to people.


Giant Desert Centipede (Scolopendra heros)

Name: Giant Desert Centipede
Size: 6-8 inches in length.
Habitat: They are only active at night and spend time under rocks or in burrows in dry grasslands, forests or deserts.
Prey: Insects, lizards and small rodents.
Danger: These animals do not bite, but pinch. A pinch from the common desert centipede can be painful but is generally not dangerous to people.
